Avatar the Last Airbender: Smoke and Shadow

There will be spoilers for the events of the series as well as the graphic novels that came before this one, you have been warned.

This next installment of the ATLA graphic novel series focuses on Fire Lord Zuko’s return to the fire nation after finding his mother. When he returns, he is not met with welcoming arms but instead with the hurt feeling’s of his ex-girlfriend, and a group of people called the New Ozai Society who want Zuko dethroned and have his father replace him. Needless to say, he’s not happy. But this isn’t the only thing that meets him. Evil spirits are kidnapping children in the night and the townspeople blame Zuko for disrupting the peace.

Mai’s younger brother is one of the children taken in the night. Mai then approaches Zuko for help since her father is hell bent on kicking Zuko off the thrown. Zuko, with the help from Aang, joins Mai to work to solve the mystery of these shadow spirits and bring back the children who were kidnapped.

This is probably one of the better storylines of the comic series. My favorite is still The Search, but this one is a good second. I think part of it has to do with the fact that this is an insular story, not really dependent on the storyline after it. In the review of North and South which is coming next week, you’ll understand why this isn’t the case for some of the other series. On the whole, I think if you like Avatar, you’re going to like this.
