This crushed me, this released me, this absolutely broke my heart and started to stitch it back together. There are so many great things about this story, so many great quotes that will stay with me forever… this book is so important.
Mara and Owen are twins and best friends. His girlfriend, is her best friend, Hannah, and when after a party she accuses Owen of rape, Mara and her family’s world is turn in on itself and they struggle to acknowledge that the man Owen has become, includes rape.
Ashley Herring Blake did a fantastic job of conveying a very complex situation. Mara’s journey is fraught with pain and questioning. Can you be a feminist and support women who have been raped and believe them and help them when the person they are saying raped them is your brother? It’s a thought that makes you go, “I’m glad it’s a hypothetical and not real” because even though I know what I would do, I can’t doubt that it wouldn’t be torturous.
Every angle of this conversation is explored and it is given the time it deserves. If you feel like you can handle it, I highly suggest reading this for nothing if not just to get some perspective on how something like this might play out.
